I know, I know – I’m a slacker. It’s been well over a month since I last wrote. I’ll try to be better at it in the future.
Let me get you caught up on things. Miss Missy our foster beagle has moved to a different foster home after being with us about 2 months. The rescue is hoping that exposing her to new things will help her gain confidence and become the awesome pet that mom knows she can be.
Pixie got a boo-boo in early May that required 3 stitches. She removed 2 of the 3 herself in about one week, thus mom says it really didn’t do any good to spend the money for the stitches. Pixie now has distinctive scar on her left side.
About 1/2 week after Pixie’s boo-boo, mom came home and discovered that I had one! I ended up with 5 stitches and I was a good boy. I left my stitches alone and only have a thin scar that won’t be noticeable once my fur grows back.
That brings us up to last night. Mom got home from and started on her evening chores, mainly feeding us critters. She went outside on the deck to see if we wanted to play. Of course we didn’t, but I was really sniffing around a lot. Mom noticed an area on the deck floor that looked like it might have had some blood or something on it. That prompted an immediate paw check on all of us pups. She didn’t find any injuries. I kept sniffing up a post and looking at a plant mom has hanging there. She thought a chipmunk or squirrel might have climbed in it earlier in the day before escaping and that was what I was smelling. So mom figured she would humor me and she got the pot down for me to look in. I wasn’t interested, I kept looking up the post.
The deck is a covered deck with a cathedral type ceiling. The cross beam that supports everything is about 15 feet up. And everything is made of wood, so it is perfect for climbing, if you are the climbing type. Well… mom discovered what had caught our attention so much once she started looking up. On that cross beam was two juvenile raccoons!! Mom figures they had climbed up there very early in the morning and then decided that nice wide beam would be a good place to sleep, and the roof provided them a nice dry spot to nap (we’ve been having quite a bit of rain lately).
Well needless to say – the raccoons needed to be removed from the deck. It wasn’t safe for them to be there and it wasn’t safe for us pups to be that close to them either. Mom figured a spray with the water hose would convince them to climb down & head back to the woods. That didn’t work exactly as hoped. Turns out water is something they were used to, and they just huddled up together. Water combined with some nudging from a PVC pipe seemed to do the trick. Both raccoons were removed from the deck and one immediately headed for the woods, the second climbed up a large tree in the yard. Mom hopes it made an exit to the woods once we were in the house and night came.
So that’s what I’ve been up to so far this year. Can’t wait to see what other adventures will be heading my way….. people say that I might see some bears when we stay at the cabin. What’s a bear???
