Almost A Year

Boy! It’s been almost a year since my last entry – my typist has really been slacking!!

So what’s been going on since last summer? We had some pretty cold & icy winter weather, glad us pups were snug in the warm house during those days. Pixie has been on chipmunk patrol almost every day, weather permitting. She will even sit out on watch during light rain showers. That girl is dedicated to her sport! Ugg is still being an annoying pest but he’s the apple of dad’s eye, so I have to tolerate him.

The parent’s have been busy pretty much every weekend. They are trying to finish up our tiny “weekend cabin” and they have been busy trying to coordinate the building of our new home. This new home will get Pixie back closer to her North Carolina roots since that is where she was born and our new home is around 24 miles away from the NC state line. I think I will like living in the mountains – plenty of wildlife to watch, deers, turkeys, lizards, etc. The only thing I will miss is barking at the weekly trash pick up guys, UPS & FedEx deliveries and the mailman. Those things are not an option where the house is going. Sigh… I really hope the wildlife will make enough appearances to keep my barking voice in shape.

Here’s the view I will be enjoying from my future new deck in the late fall & early spring.

Summer Recap

Well, since I haven’t been on top of things – I guess I need to do a summer recap.

In late July, we said good-bye to my kitty sibling Bucky Kat. Bucky had went into kidney failure and the pawrents decided it would be the kindest thing to end her suffering. Bucky & I had a special love/hate relationship. I miss that old girl.

The pawrents are trying to sale one of the houses they own. So far tons of lookers, but no buyers. The lack of buyers put a damper on summer vacation plans. No sand between this boy’s toes this year. Bummer..

We did spend some time at our cabin on the site of our future home. That was nice. I pointed the deer that jumped out of the woods to mom one afternoon. The next day I alerted her to about 15 turkeys wandering around in the woods. I think I’m going to like living there full-time! Plenty of wildlife to keep me busy!

That pretty much covers my summer in review. Not very exciting, but that’s a dogs life.

Summertime & Ice Cream

Mom worked from home for about an hour yesterday – I love it when she does that! All us pups greeted her at the door and boy were we busy panting. She figures we had been up to no good out in the yard. I don’t know why she would think that! Anyway, she took a glance at the thermometer and realized that it was 95 degrees outside! YIKES! That was toasty! Why we would be outside instead of inside the air-conditioned house made no sense to her. She figured it wouldn’t hurt to convince us to stay inside and cool down a little. So she pulled out some blackmail from the freezer…. freshly made, homemade Frosty Paws! OH My DOG! I love me some frosty paws! I hope mom comes home early today and hands out more of those wonderful, cold, tasty treats!

I wish my bowl of frosty paws was huge!

Sick Sibling

My kitty sibling, Bucky Kat, isn’t feeling very well. We were out of town for a couple days last weekend and when we got back, mom noticed that Bucky wasn’t acting herself. We kept close watch on her for a few days and it seemed like she was improving. But by Friday she was acting “off” again. So mom made an appointment for a vet visit on Saturday morning.

Turns out Bucky was dehydrated and the vet wanted to run some blood work to see if something else was going on. We are waiting on those results to come back today, so Bucky has been spending some quality time at the vet’s office. It also seems that she has lost all or most of her vision. 😦 My poor kitty sister is really old, but I really like her, so I hope we get good news this afternoon.

If you could spare a little positive thinking and send it Bucky’s way, I’d appreciate it.

And the result are in….

I’m officially a Tennessee Brown Dog, aka: mutt, Heinz 57.

Mom has been working on having DNA tests done on us pups just because she was curious. And because everyone kept asking what type of dog my brother Ugg was. Turns out Ugg is quite the melting pot. He’s pure Korean Jindo on one side and a mix of most likely Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican Hairless) and Chinese Shar-Pei on the other.

My results aren’t quite as spectacular. Looks like my whole family tree was basically mixed breeds. Here’s test results:

Crazy Winter Weather

This winter has been a crazy one. Rain, Sleet, Snow and Sun all combined. And it seems to change at the drop of the hat! We’ve had several “decent” snowfalls this season, at least for east Tennessee. Here’s a photo from one of those snows last month. We had 6-8 inches out of that little overnight storm.

This past weekend was a nice one. Saturday was in the lower 60s and sunny. Yesterday was close to 70 degrees!

And want to guess what the weather was like today?? Highs in the low 30s with freezing rain & light snow/sleet. Not very funny Mother Nature!

Somebody’s been sleeping in my bed!

Remember the children’s story “Goldilocks & the Three Bears”? Well, we’ve had a similar story playing out here in the house. We had a new foster sibling – a young beagle pup. Pixie and Ugg have been acting like the 3 bears. Neither one want to sleep where the pup has slept. I will admit, he smelled a little funky – but he couldn’t have a bath due to the fact he’d had a couple surgeries and needed to heal up first. Pup, Otis, started out laying on the love seat which has a blanket covering it. The blanket must have picked up his funky smell because Pixie & Ugg started to avoid spending any time on it.

Then came the big one! Mom was looking for Otis one morning, and she found him curled up in Pixie’s crate! Mom knew that this was going to be trouble. Pixie loves her crate and sleeps in it every night, she goes to it on her own and doesn’t have the door closed on it. Pixie noticed that someone had been sleeping in her bed right off. And she was not pleased! Mom immediately pulled all the bedding out and washed it. As soon as it came out the dryer, Pixie’s eyes lit up. She appeared to be so excited that the puppy smell was gone.

So my question is this – is Pixie just strange? Or do other pups hate it when someone else sleeps in their beds?

Treats & Eats

Hmmm… I’ve been meaning to write another entry but couldn’t find just the right image to include with it. I still haven’t found the right image, but I couldn’t wait any longer to tell y’all what I ate last weekend! My mom likes to make desserts, cakes in particular. Dad kept whining about how much he loves banana pudding and how she never makes him banana pudding. She says if he really wants it that bad, he could make it himself, but she decided to humor him. She made him a super-duper version of banana pudding. This one had homemade whipped topping mixed into the pudding mix and it was topped with the same homemade whipped topping. Needless to say, dad loved the banana pudding. Mom ate a small bowl of it and was done with it (she doesn’t eat too much of the sweets she makes). Dad claimed he would eat on the pudding a day or two and then take it to work and let his co-workers finish it off. Well, he lied, he decided to keep it all for himself. Now let me tell you, that pudding sure did smell good. Us pups were literally drooling every time he ate a bowl of it. Mom decided reduce the amount of pudding that dad had to eat. She decided that us pups needed to eat some of it. She pulled out some paper plates and plopped spoonfuls of pudding on them. One plate per pup –  and OH BOY! Did we ever enjoy that treat!! It was delicious!

Ready for some adventures?

I know, I know – I’m a slacker. It’s been well over a month since I last wrote. I’ll try to be better at it in the future.

Let me get you caught up on things. Miss Missy our foster beagle has moved to a different foster home after being with us about 2 months. The rescue is hoping that exposing her to new things will help her gain confidence and become the awesome pet that mom knows she can be.

Pixie got a boo-boo in early May that required 3 stitches. She removed 2 of the 3 herself in about one week, thus mom says it really didn’t do any good to spend the money for the stitches. Pixie now has distinctive scar on her left side.

About 1/2 week after Pixie’s boo-boo, mom came home and discovered that I had one! I ended up with 5 stitches and I was a good boy. I left my stitches alone and only have a thin scar that won’t be noticeable once my fur grows back.

That brings us up to last night. Mom got home from and started on her evening chores, mainly feeding us critters. She went outside on the deck to see if we wanted to play. Of course we didn’t, but I was really sniffing around a lot. Mom noticed an area on the deck floor that looked like it might have had some blood or something on it. That prompted an immediate paw check on all of us pups. She didn’t find any injuries. I kept sniffing up a post and looking at a plant mom has hanging there. She thought a chipmunk or squirrel might have climbed in it earlier in the day before escaping and that was what I was smelling. So mom figured she would humor me and she got the pot down for me to look in. I wasn’t interested, I kept looking up the post.

The deck is a covered deck with a cathedral type ceiling. The cross beam that supports everything is about 15 feet up. And everything is made of wood, so it is perfect for climbing, if you are the climbing type. Well… mom discovered what had caught our attention so much once she started looking up. On that cross beam was two juvenile raccoons!! Mom figures they had climbed up there very early in the morning and then decided that nice wide beam would be a good place to sleep, and the roof provided them a nice dry spot to nap (we’ve been having quite a bit of rain lately).raccoons

Well needless to say – the raccoons needed to be removed from the deck. It wasn’t safe for them to be there and it wasn’t safe for us pups to be that close to them either. Mom figured a spray with the water hose would convince them to climb down & head back to the woods. That didn’t work exactly as hoped. Turns out water is something they were used to, and they just huddled up together. Water combined with some nudging from a PVC pipe seemed to do the trick. Both raccoons were removed from the deck and one immediately headed for the woods, the second climbed up a large tree in the yard. Mom hopes it made an exit to the woods once we were in the house and night came.

So that’s what I’ve been up to so far this year. Can’t wait to see what other adventures will be heading my way….. people say that I might see some bears when we stay at the cabin. What’s a bear???

New Things

It’s been a little while since I last wrote and some things are changing. The weather is the first thing that I can say has changed. Most days are warm enough for me to take a dip in my swimming pool. Mom broke it out for me a couple of weeks ago. And now I have a second pool! One of mom’s co-workers bought one for her dogs last summer and they didn’t like it. Those dogs must be crazy! Pools are awesome! But then again, I have a couple of siblings who don’t like pools either.

Mom finally decided to try fostering dogs again. She stopped for several years for various reasons. Right now she’s fostering a cute little girl beagle for SOS Beagles Rescue. This pup is okay and for some reason she’s crazy about me. Must be my dashing good looks! Here’s a photo mom took of the foster sib, “Missy”.

missy

Now Missy & I were having a right good time this morning when mom happened to look outside. Seems like we had a little something we were playing with, this made mom suspicious so she decided to take a look. We had a little field mouse and were tossing it up in the air, pouncing on it etc. Mom didn’t approve of this so she scooped up said mouse and removed it from our area. It was alive when she interrupted our fun. She claims she will bury it tonight if it is still where she left it and it happened to die. This is sort of what it would have looked like it was dry instead of slobber coated when she took it away. Of course I think our captive “might” have been a touch smaller. Mom said it looked terrified!
